Community Involvement Makes a Difference

Get Real is another CSE curriculum on OSPI's list. The authors are Planned Parenthood League of Massachusetts. One of the exercises gives students 10 dating behaviors including having sex and touching your partner under their clothes. This is a 7th grade lesson for 12-year-old children. They're supposed to talk about the behaviors with a parent or a "caring adult" but why would these even be listed as options for children that age?

Two years ago, Planned Parenthood gave the Grandview School District $25K when they were considering using Get Real. The superintendent said it would be used for technology and accepting it didn't mean the district would have to use Get Real.

The community showed up and the curriculum was dropped from consideration.

The two takeaways: All CSE curricula are similar and parents getting involved makes a difference.
